Graham Moore (writer)

Graham Moore (born 1981) is an American screenwriter and author. He is best known for his New York Times Best Seller debut novel The Sherlockian, published in 2010. Moore is also known for writing the #1 Black List screenplay of 2011, which was the basis for the 2014 historical film The Imitation Game.

Early life



Moore was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised on the north side of Chicago. His father is an insurance defense attorney and his mother works for the University of Chicago. They divorced when Moore was young. His mother, Susan Sher (née Steiner), was the City of Chicago's chief lawyer and was First Lady Michelle Obama's chief of staff. He was brought up Jewish. He graduated from the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools in 1999. He received his degree in religious history from Columbia University and worked as a sound engineer in the music business before becoming a full-time writer.

His stepfather is Cook County Circuit Court Judge Neil Cohen. Graham's maternal grandfather, Charles Steiner, was a physician in New Jersey who co-founded the West Essex General Hospital in Livingston, New Jersey; his grandmother, Gloria L. Steiner, was a psychologist who co-authored the book Children, Families, and HIV/AIDS. His brother, Evan Charles Moore, is a technology entrepreneur.

Career

Moore began his writing career working with a childhood friend Ben Epstein who was attending Tisch School of the Arts in New York City. One of his early Hollywood jobs was on the writing staff of the short-lived TV series 10 Things I Hate About You. His adapted screenplay for the 2014 film The Imitation Game, based on the biography Alan Turing: The Enigma by Andrew Hodges, landed at the top of the of 2011 Black List of the best unproduced scripts in Hollywood. The script earned Moore numerous award nominations, including the 2014 Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay.

In 2012 it was announced that Moore would write the screenplay for the film adaptation for the novel The Devil in the White City. The film will be a Warner Bros. production with Leonardo Di Caprio as the lead.
